As an aside, I come from families that did not believe in taking candid photos. I don't think my dad's family even owned a camera.

My mom's side of the family had several, but only took photographs on very special occasions or had formal portraits taken by salon photographers.

I was raised with the same candid photo taking ethic. When I did take photos, my mom would most always say, "be careful, don't waste film".

If it wasn't for friends, girlfriends, and many others, I doubt I would have more than a handful of candid shots of me taken over the entire course of my lifetime. I thank them all for those now very much treasured images.

However, I do very much love shooting still images in a creative professional atmosphere, and my mom's "don't waste film" metaphor has stayed with me throughout my professional photographic and cinematography career.
